Over 50 years ago, the US and Cuba froze almost all diplomatic relations. Last April, the two former Cold War enemies made a first step towards reconciliation. For the first time, Barack Obama and Raul Castro shook hands. This historical handshake embodies the normalization of relationships between Washington and Havana: the re-opening of embassies in both countries, the end of the existing custom barriers, free movement of persons… Eventually, all these measures aim at bringing an end to the current embargo. Nevertheless, could this unexpected change really mark the beginning of a new era of cooperation between the two countries or is it simply proof of the United States’ economical opportunism?
Michael Parmly, US diplomat in Havana from 2005 to 2008 will share his point of view with us on September the 17th and determine how two conflicting nationalisms could, in the end, converge towards shared interests. Could Cuban communism and American capitalism be compatible after all?

Pendant plus de 50 ans, les Etats-Unis et Cuba, pays distants d’à peine 150km, ont rompu leurs relations diplomatiques. Mais en avril dernier Barack Obama et Raul Castro se sont rencontrés et serrés la main, signe d’une réconciliation envisagée entre les deux anciens ennemis de la guerre froide. Ce geste ouvre-t-il la voie à une normalisation des relations entre Washington et la Havane : Réouverture des ambassades, levée des barrières douanières, libre circulation… voir à terme à la levée de l’embargo sur Cuba ? S’agit-il d’un réel projet de coopération ou d’une simple opportunité économique ?
Michael Parmly, qui fut diplomate à la Havane de 2005 à 2008 et en Afghanistan, éclairera la situation en nous livrant, sa vision des relations entre ces 2 nations : celle de deux nationalismes antinomiques qui pourraient aujourd’hui converger vers des intérêts communs.
Le capitalisme américain et le communisme cubain seraient-ils devenus enfin compatibles ?
